about

In the summer of 2000 Khantra laid down some live recording demos at Future Sounds Studio in Parsippany NJ. It was a time when the band was finding the footing of who they were going to be going forward. A lot of old songs were on there way out making way for new material that would push the band in a more mature direction. The band chose what they though were their best songs at the time: New Song, Bad Omen, Cutting Corners, and Altercation with Old Peculiar on the maybe pile because it had a much different flavor that the other material. The day of the session the band played through the songs multiple times until there was a decent take of each. Somewhere in the mix they gave Old Peculiar a whirl. They did only one take which at the time probably seamed good enough. Later upon reviewing the rough mix it was decided that the song was played too fast and just didn't really work as well as the others. It was abandoned leaving just the four other songs for the demo. Here it is very rough and too fast but an interesting example of "almost" where this old song was close to being grouped into the era of the S/T record. These demos were tracked with Ned just playing guitar. Later he took the finished demos and at home, added bass over them. Since this track was essentially discarded it never got the bass treatment. That's why the sound is particularly thin.
